The estranged wife of a millionaire businessman spent last night behind bars, charged with his murder.
Diane Griffey was last night charged with murdering her husband Michael, 45, in December last year.
Griffey and the couple’s son Kenny, 18, were yesterday questioned by homicide detectives for more than eight hours before Kenny was released without charge.
Griffey had originally told police she found Mr Griffey’s bloodied body wrapped in a sheet in the garage of the family’s home in Ahern Road, Pakenham, on the night of January 2.
The millionaire businessman had lain dead while Mrs Griffey hosted a New Year’s Eve party at the property. Police believe he had been dead for up to four days and an autopsy found he had died of injuries from an unknown instrument.
A wood splitter was among items police seized from the property.
Mr Griffey had been living at San Remo after he and his wife split more than two years ago.
The father of three continued to run a plastering company from the $500,000 Pakenham property, where Diane Griffey lived with Kenny and daughters Cassie and Natasha.
Fearing he was going to die during a recent serious health scare, Mr Griffey wrote to his estranged wife that she was “the only woman I truly loved”.
Diane Griffey was remanded in custody to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
