Angry ex-wife loses appeal

November 26,2004

A WOMAN today lost an appeal against a 10-year jail sentence for running over her estranged husband and his baby son in a four-wheel drive.

Queensland’s Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by Phirajit Evans, 42, against her conviction and sentence for attempting to murder the pair on October 2, 2002.

Evans, a Thai national, was jailed in Brisbane in April this year after a jury found herguilty of two counts of attempted murder.

She was sentenced to a 10-year jail term and automatically declared a serious violent offender, meaning she must serve 80 per cent of the sentence before parole.

Evans had driven to her estranged husband Christopher Evans’ house at 7am after abusing him over the phone about a tax bill.

Mr Evans was taking his then 16-month old son Chad from a new relationship out in his pram for a walk and was chased down by his ex-wife in the car at Manly West, on Brisbane’s bayside.

She knocked him over and crushed the pram.

Remarkably, both Mr Evans and his son escaped with minor injuries.

The Evans were married in Australia after meeting in Thailand in 1996.

They separated in February 2000 and have since divorced.
